Boston Marathon Articles

When I was reading the 3 Boston Marathon blog stories I was very interested in seeing the different types of news feature stories that could be spun off of this one event. Each one had a different angle and presented a different perspective. For example, the "Older Sibling's" article presented the reader with more insight and background to Tamerlan Tsarnaev, one of the boys responisble for the bombings. Instead of just portraying him as the evil bad guy, the article portrayed him as his co-workers and friends really saw him. "In the ring, he could knock a man out with one punch," "But when he sat down at a piano, he could play classical music like you wouldn't believe." It talked about his life and the shock his actions brought upon those who thought they really knew him.
However, the article "Valor, Devotion..." took a different spin on the bombings. I thought the beginning was very cool, the language of this article was very different and unexpected. "What you're about to read is how it all ended." Boom. right there it drew me in. It was a different type of news feature story and really captured the ending of the Boston Marathon bombings.
The article, "A Beacon of Inspiration after Injury" started off completely different. It took a man who wasn't involved or had been injured in the bombings, but still tied him to the event. It told his story and journey about losing his legs and part of his left hand and how he helped others like him who had been injured in the Boston Marathon Bombings. I enjoyed the profile angle of this news feature. I feel like I learned a lot by reading these 3 articles and the different ways to right a news feature story and an event like this one.

  1. Great that you're noticing different angles to one story and how different writers approach them. That piece about the dead brother bomber was fascinating.
